Maurice Ottoman Army finished!

I wanted to do Janissary in black.  Of course, black by itself would have left the figures looking like I'd primed them and put them on the tabletop. So it was black, dark grey highlight and a lighter grey highlight after that.  In other words, not too black when you're finished!  Here and now, grey is my new black.

And the inspiration.

No matter the continent, century or cut of cloth, combatants always look crisp in crimson.  I think it holds true here.

Inspiration:
9 foot, 4 cavalry, 3 irregular foot and 5 cannons-the Maurice Ottomans massed up.

That's enough to give me plenty of options in my campaigns so I'm calling the Ottoman Project bitirdim (if you guessed finished, you are a clever lad or lass).  In retrospect, I could have build this army to more closely parallel its 18th century counterpart.  I'm embarrassed to admit this didn't cross my mind when I started out down this road. I didn't realize OG carries a Seven Years War Ottoman line or that the SYW figs are in marching order.  What I've done is painted up an army and at the finish, realized that technically, I'm on the Imagi-Nation road.  It was a short drive and I rather like the view.  I'm now ready to get a campaign going so all is good.

As is my habit, we'll exit the brief Ottoman Project with The Pogues "Turkish Song of the Damned."  Here's hoping Mark's British army will be doing the two step off the table's edge when they meet my Ottomans in Maurice!

  1. Very nicely done, Monty. I agree, red is the "winning" color!

  2. Truly impressive army you've got there Monty. Inspirational too. If I ever get my Prussians, Russians, and Austrians (gasp!) done for SYW, I'd love to finish of my 18th century collection with an army like this.

Although I was already a big fan of the period, I only discovered the whole ImagiNation thing last year on the blogosphere with lots of great color schemes out there. It's also one of the reasons I was excited to pick up Maurice.

I face similar challenges when painting/highlighting black. I usually mix a dark grey with black for my first highlight and then make it just a bit lighter for the second. I follow that up with a black wash to darken things back up and smooth the highlights out. Really the black wash is the key to making it look black again, but not flat. The highlights are just a bit more subtle than with other colors.

Tips aside, I think your units look great the way they are!

    1. Feld, you have 3 armies in SYW waiting to paint? In 28mm of course. You do have your work cut out for you!

And I hadn't even noticed ImagiNation until Maurice. Now its where I'm at.

Lastly, I like your scheme for a truer black. I will give this a spin. Good suggestion coming back over with a black wash.

    2. Well... I have plans within plans... lol

I started slowly collecting 28mm Wargames Foundry Prussians and Russians this February (think bargain hunting on eBay) and storing them away. After I'm done with them I'll move on to the Austrians and then maybe the Ottomans. (That's the plan anyway).

With Napoleonics I'm being a bit smarter and buying as I paint. The nice thing with historicals is that it's a true hobby. Not like Warhammer for example where I have to get something done for the next tourny/campaign or before the next edition makes my unit obsolete. I can plan my projects/armies over the next 3, 5, or even 10 years, and still be able to field them the same as when I started. :)

    3. lol. I'm going to have to start trolling eBay. I keep hearing stories like yours so it sounds like its worth a look.

You are spot on. Collect good historical figs today, and they'll still be relevant 10 years from now!

    1. Thanks Fire! All I painted up was the 9 units of Janissary. The rest I lifted from my Ottoman Turks. Since the same 8 poses repeat AND there were no shields with these gentlemen, it went down pretty quickly!

I'm looking forward to doing some Maurice AARs once we fire up. you guys set the bar high with the Sausage Wars but we'll try to manage. ;-)

  5. Wow! Looks great, Monty!

I just hope these chaps don't follow the unwritten rule; the fancier the uniform, the worse they fight! ;)

    1. Hey Phil! Have I told you that you have great taste in armies and music? No? Well, consider it done!

20something years later, I still have it in for the Pogues and Shane MacGowan.

You are too kind Gilles! I'm tempted to one day paint a 2nd Ottoman army. I found a link to a Turkish museum and it turns out the Ottomans were even more colorful in dress that I painted, including lots of pink! And we know how the historical hobbyists love pink in uniforms.

    1. Thanks Marco and thank you for following! I wish I lived close enough to get a game in with you and Gilles. That and watch him paint.

Good suggestion on FOGN. I know two locals who are building for that. Maybe I can sneak my Janissary into a match. I also thought I could use them in FoGR even though the bases are a touch deep.

    1. Artar! I've never seen those clips-thanks for sharing! I was in NY this summer and there was a parade, but not the Ottoman parade! It looks like its May 19th of every year. Very cool.

  11. They have concert everyday in military museum. I hope you can see them live one day. It is interesting standing one step away of an armored janissary :)
