Norse Gaels warlord & wrapup

It's the finish line for another SAGA warband.  I turned the warlord that comes with the Norse Gaels pack into a bannerman. With both hands tucked behind a shield, he'd have made a non too threatening warlord. The lovely banner is by LBMS.

Last of the Norse Gaels hearthguard.  I've looked but cannot find the name of the loincloth-like protective kit these fellows are wearing.  I assume it's a Dark Ages protective cup?

While the Norse Gaels are an older line of Gripping Beast figs, the rough spots in some of them were surpassed by their character and energy.  Now I need to get these fellows out for a "test drive."

I've put my 15mm Later Hungarian army up for sale at the top of my blog. The poor fellows have not seen the light of day so off they'll go. No worries, I've got loads of unpainted lead coming in the mail to me right now. The seller told me one of my boxes weighs 19 lbs so I think it's safe to say I'm on my way to building a lead mountain!

    1. Thanks Jonathan! I'm very excited. Now that I've run my PayPal account up, I've been investing in more reading, reference material and large lots of unpainted minis. If only I could take a sabbatical from work and really go after the painting.

    2. We could all put to good use a sabbatical from work, right?

    1. Iowa! What else is there to do in a winter like this one? Our last storm turned all the roads to glaze ice and we're told to stay off them until they melt up a bit. Painting weekend for the win!

  8. Hi Monty, lovely work again (as usual!), Good decision on the warlord too - what fig did you substitute for him? Was it one from the GB Norse-Gael starter pack?

On the subject of that odd loincloth affair, I've seen it in Angus McBride's depictions of Hebridean and Irish warriors, but nowhere else. The sources appear to be some remarkably worn Irish high crosses from the 10th century. It appears to be worn over a tunic, but whether or not it's another form of overtunic or exists solely as a cloth attached to a belt is unclear. Clearly, more research is needed to solve this one, 'cos I got nothin'!

    1. Thanks for that. I should have known that if anyone has the lowdown on the Dark Ages, it's you!

Oh, the substitute figure is a separate command figure under the Norse Gaels. Thanks Ev!

    1. Thanks Cyrus! There was a dustup in a forum about Dark Age banners. I figure the people who made the Bayeux tapestry could certainly have whipped up banners for their warlords. I do love LMBS banners.

  14. Looking great, but what was one to expect!

I think it was a good call regarding the bannerman. I think he even looks too non-threatening for medical bannerman. That is something I hate about some of the GB minis, the Warlords lack energy. Same with my Byzantine Warlord, he is completely idle. Worst thing is... i had a friend of mine get me the alternative (more dynamic) Byzantine Warlord at Salute last year, only to find he is on that same bloody standing horse! :-(

    1. Yes, the Byz warlord is too docile. Plus, he's the Emperor and can only afford to put his horse in 1/2 barding? It must have been during the low point of the empire, I guess ;-)
